If you have a gas blowback airsoft pistol, like a CO2-powered or a green gas Glock, how long it will last, and how well it will perform in matches, are both products of the maintenance you administer from time to time.
Granted, you might never once unholster your GBB pistol during a match, but when you use it or carry it in the elements, it’s still important to remember that, just like your AEG, you should break it down and take care of it from time to time.
Here’s how to do it.
Unload and Clear
The first step is always to remove the magazine and gas canisters from the pistol and clear it.
Disassembly
To disassemble most CO2 and green gas airsoft gas blowback pistols, first you must remove the slide, then depress the spring guide and remove the inner barrel which will be connected to the hop-up system.
Then, remove the spring and guide, followed by the outer barrel.
Cleaning and Lubricating
You can use Q-tips, paper or cloth towels, or gun cleaning patches to clean the nooks and crannies of the metal slide. Wipe them clean until whatever you’re using comes off clean and white.
Cleaning the inner barrel is a bit more involved. You don’t want to use silicone oil, as this will leave behind residue that will attract dirt; rubing alcohol won’t but it can damage your plastic components as well as your hop-up bucking.
Also, the use of paper towels or Q-tips in the inner barrel can leave micro-scratches that will affect accuracy.
Instead, we suggest using a cleaning rod with a jag and cleaning patches that are made of soft fibers. You can get these at most gun shops.
Remove the hop-up unit from the inner barrel, wet a patch, and run it through the inner barrel until it comes out clean.
Allow the inner barrel to dry fully, then use a little Teflon-based cleaning solution to coat the inside of the bore. This will not damage your hop-up’s components or leave a residue that will attract dirt and affect accuracy.
Once you’ve cleaned the inner barrel, slide, and spring, you can use a little bit of silicone oil on the spring and guide, as well as on the slide, to reduce friction on the moving parts. Just be sure to wipe away any excess as silicone oil is sticky and any excess will attract particulate matter.
Reassembly
After cleaning and lubricating your GBB airsoft pistol, the final step is to allow it to dry fully before reassembling it in the opposite order from which you took it apart.
