How Come High Bay LED Lights Can Keep HVAC Costs Down?

Must read

If you look up “benefits of high bay LED lights,” the top results are that LEDs are tough, efficient, and long-lasting. Do a little digging and you’ll see that LEDs are also much greener and many can be recycled as well.

There’s another top benefit that some blogs and companies report, and it’s a big one. Even though LEDs get most of their press for their energy efficiency, they also make headlines for being cool.

And, no, we don’t mean it like that. LEDs are literally cooler. As in, they produce less heat than all other sorts of industrial, commercial, and domestic lighting by comparison.

Let’s take a closer look at how high bay LED lights can help manage HVAC cooling costs.

High-Bay LED Lights and HVAC Savings: The Perfect Pairing
First off, LEDs do produce heat, and heat is related to wattage, which in turn is related to the voltage and power draw (current) associated with LED lights. However, LEDs operate under much lower voltages and currents when compared to other forms of lighting.

The reason that LEDs offer so much potential for cooling cost savings, specifically as high bay LED lighting, comes from the fact that they are usually used to replace HID lights.

HID, or high-intensity discharge, light bulbs, are commonly used to illuminate stadiums, parking lots, and of course, warehouses and high bays.

They are revered for their bright light output, relative energy efficiency, and diverse range of color temperatures.

But they are hot – very, very hot. In fact, HID lamps can burn at several hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

The reason for this is luminous efficiency. HID lamps take in electrical energy and convert it into light. They can potentially convert anywhere from 70% to 80% of input energy into light as an output, under ideal conditions.

The rest of the energy is lost as heat due to inefficient processes. By comparison, LEDs are much, much more efficient – they can convert upwards of 90% of input energy into pure light. Less energy is wasted in the form of heat.

That’s one figure – the other is that LEDs require less line voltage and lower current to power them in the first place, so the amount of energy input and output is objectively lower.

Add that up, and high bay LED lights produce much less heat, which means high bays, warehouses, gyms and other large spaces lit by them potentially need to spend less on cooling costs.

What Other Benefits Do High-Bay LED Lights Offer?
In addition to producing less heat as a byproduct, LED lights also offer a number of other benefits:

● Longer lifespan, up to 50,000 hours or more.

● Many are recyclable.

● They consume less energy and require a lower power supply.

● They’re physically durable and most are shatter-resistant.

● They’re available in a wide range of lumen output ratings and color temperature options.
