It’s hard not to notice the price of Benchmade knives. Despite their popularity (or perhaps because of it) they command prices that can at minimum produce a bit of sticker shock.
But the truth is there are many reasons that they command this high price, though one of them, on its own, justifies it.
Its Benchmade’s AXIS lock. Here’s why it’s been a game changer since it came on the scene.
Better, Stronger, Safer
The AXIS lock of Benchmade knife company operates according to a slightly different principle from most other common folding knife locks, and when it was introduced just under 40 years ago, it completely revolutionized the folding knife game.
The basis of the AXIS lock is a bar that is set between the knife’s scales, and which rides in a channel cut into the liners. There is a U-shaped spring that holds the bar in place, either open or closed.
To open and lock the blade, the bar must be pulled to the rear. When the knife blade swings open, the bar is then released and slides forward into a channel in the base of the knife. The spring holds it in place, securely locking it.
The lock cannot unintentionally disengage unless through complete failure of the system, but the bar is made of steel, and the only way for it to fail would effectively result in complete destruction of the knife.
There is no other way to say this: it is the strongest knife lock on the market and likely the strongest one that has ever been developed.
This is not the only aspect of the AXIS lock that makes it safer, however. Because of its design, one does not need to put his or her fingers in the path of the blade when opening or closing the knife.
On that note, it is also naturally ambidextrous and favors neither a right nor left-handed user, since the lock can be engaged through both sides of the knife.
Stronger, intuitive, and safer, there are few if any other styles of folding knife lock on the market that can rival the AXIS, which is perhaps the reason that so many other knifemakers have copied the design and call it by other names.
Yet, there are many other attributes of Benchmade knives that also justify the price.
Beyond the AXIS
In addition to the AXIS lock of Benchmade knives, you should also consider that their novel and unique profiles are made using a variety of high-quality scale materials and super steels that offer high-corrosion resistance paired with high degrees of toughness and edge retention, rounding out the value of these knives.
