Buying Glass Hand Pipes? Read This Quick Guide

Must read

Many smoking pipes are made of glass. Glass is affordable, easy to use, requires no break-in, and unlike some other natural materials, cannot be scorched.

But before you buy a glass hand pipe, make sure you get what you’re looking for with this short guide.

Pipe Material
Pipe material is most important here. Of course, it will be glass if you are buying a glass hand pipe but the type of glass is critical.

Only buy glass pipes (or pipes with glass bowls) if they are made of borosilicate glass, which has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, meaning it’s much more resistant to changes in temperature (critical for glass smoking pipes).

But there’s more to this: borosilicate glass is also very physically tough and unlikely to crack or shatter – which is a good trait for a “pocket piece.”

Bowl Size
Any bowl size can work but remember that your “sesh” will be cut short with annoying frequency if you buy a glass hand pipe with a bowl that’s too small.

Keep your goal in mind: are you looking for a pocket piece with a small bowl for a quick on-the-go smoke or do you need a pipe with a larger bowl to pass around for group smoking sessions?

Pipe Size
The larger the pipe is, overall, the better it will be able to absorb heat. Smoke from a glass pipe is harsh and scratchy as it is; hot smoke is even worse.

If you can’t stand the harsh smoke of glass pipes, but still enjoy the convenience, get a larger pipe.

(Alternatively, get a bubbler or another sort of water pipe which will produce a much cooler smoke.)

Stem Length
Not as important as pipe size, but the length of the stem will also play a part in how well the smoke cools off before it reaches your lips. For instance, a style of pipe known as a “Sherlock” pipe will produce a cooler smoke, all things considered, than a small glass spoon pipe.

Is There a Carb?
Many glass smoking pipes have a carb hole (a small hole usually in the side of the bowl) which allows the smokers to control the rate of airflow. With a carb, you can get more potent, intense hits without wasting any herb.

A pipe doesn’t absolutely have to have one, but you can exercise greater control over the smoking experience if the pipe does have a carb.

Last but Not Least: Design
Finally, consider what appeals to you. It won’t make a difference in how the pipe smokes, but one of the great things about glass smoking pipes is the variety.

There are a wide range of blown glass hand pipes in cool colors, patterns and styles, and some are even handmade.

For many smokers, their pocket piece is a reflection of their personality.
