Improving Airsoft Accuracy: 6 Hacks

Must read

AEG not shooting where you point it? The problem could be much more basic than you think. Let’s take a look at some of the most straightforward ways you can improve accuracy in your airsoft gun.

Shoot Appropriate Ammo (Which Basically Means Heavier)
First things first, you need to be shooting polished, one-piece ammo. Low-grade ammo is not going to be accurate no matter what you do.

Beyond that, if you’re shooting an AEG with a powerful, high-torque motor and a high FPS rating (350-400+) you should probably be shooting heavier airsoft ammo.

Why heavier? Because lighter ammo reacts more to air pressure and wind resistance, which can make lighter ammo yaw, pitch, roll, dip, and otherwise fly off-trajectory.

If you’re shooting .2g BBs, consider shooting .25gs or even .3gs.

Adjust Your Hop-Up
Your hop-up system puts backspin on BBs, which does two things: it adds spin stability and extends ranges via the magnus effect.

Tinker around with your hop-up; it might be adding too much or too little hop to the mix, especially considering the weight of your BBs.

Adjust Your Sights
We can’t believe we need to explicitly write this, but the problem may be that you didn’t adjust your sights yet.

That is, your airsoft gun might not be shooting inaccurately at all. Get one of those targets that shows you where your shots land and adjust your rear sight accordingly. Remember to move the rear sight in the opposite direction of where the shots land.

Install a Tight-Bore Barrel
Tight bore barrels can also make a substantial difference in the accuracy of an airsoft gun. Installing a 6.03mm or even a 6.01mm tight-bore when shooting 6mm BBs can make a big difference in shot variation.

Most importantly, they’re relatively affordable upgrades and fairly easy to make.

Shoot Tracer Ammo
These last two suggestions will not actually improve the accuracy of your AEG, but may make it easier for you to connect with targets.

Consider installing a tracer unit on your muzzle and then shooting tracer rounds. They won’t be more accurate than your airsoft gun, but you will be able to see where your shot strings are landing and that can help, especially at extended distances and in the dark.

Install an Airsoft Scope or Red Dot Sight
This also won’t make your AEG more accurate but some players prefer to shoot over optics instead of over iron sights. Admittedly, they are easier to use, some of them are better to use in low-light conditions or in the dark, and they also enable more reflexive shooting.

Scopes, especially, can improve your ability to connect with a target at extended ranges. Consider getting an airsoft scope with variable magnification and one that is fog proof, dustproof, shockproof, and well-rated.
