Is the Kizer Begleiter the Best Kizer Knife?

Must read

You don’t need to look too hard to find listicles on Google that promise to deliver the “best Kizer knife” into your hands. Everyone’s out there with their two cents, hoping you’ll take it as a down payment on the truth.

Well, let’s take a step back. This isn’t an article with a bunch of entries hoping to land on the best Kizer knife by virtue of the law of large numbers. Instead, let’s take a look at a specific Kizer model that has previously been hailed as the best of the best, and see if the claims hold any water.

The Kizer Begleiter, that is.

What We Love
There’s a lot to love about the Begleiter, specifically the button lock model with carbon fiber scales and a 154CM blade that you can only get online at White Mountain Knives.

The Kizer Begleiter, the standard model, that is, with VG-10 steel and G10 scales, is good enough. The White Mountain Knives exclusive is a substantial step up.

This Begleiter model, like the others that are more standard, has an overall length of 8.125” and a 3.5” blade. It has a flat grind and a drop point profile that’s really more like a straight back – sort of reminiscent of a Mora knife.

This Begleiter is bedecked with black and red carbon fiber scales, and instead of the standard liner lock of most Begleiter models, comes with a button lock.

So, this Begleiter does everything well that all the standard Begleiters do, and then some. Let’s take a look at some of these.

The button lock is a win. It’s convenient and keeps the lock out of the way of the hands. Something we don’t really like is when a liner lock gets in the way of a grip, which often happens. The most annoying part is that by twisting the knife you can sometimes accidentally disengage the lock. That won’t happen with a button lock.

If the button lock is a win, the knife steel upgrade is a hands-down home run. The VG-10 that defines most models is great, but 154CM is not just better – it’s much, much better.

154CM is without a doubt one of the highest quality steels in the industry for knives and tools today. It is extremely corrosion resistant, capable of taking a wicked edge, and can be hardened to hold that edge for quite a while.

Most importantly, this steel is extremely tough. Like most other powerful steels, 154CM is highly resistant to cracking, chipping, or snapping, even under high-stress loads.

That makes this knife a lot tougher than meets the eye.

The handsome black and red carbon fiber scales are a nice upgrade, too.
